QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News Service, June 5) – “Within the walls” is the literal Spanish meaning of Intramuros. For many years, the walled city of Intramuros comprised the entirety of Manila.
Constructed atop Malay ruins at a strategic location in the Pasig River, Intramuros was the center of Spanish rule in the country. Although other parts of the City of Manila eventually extended outside of the wall, Intramuros remained as the political and economical center of the Spanish colonial government.
Unfortunately, many of its proud structure were destroyed in the aftermath of World War II. The Philippine government initiated major restoration efforts in the 80’s. The successful restoration allows visitors to experience the Spanish-era Manila, through the walled city’s museums and restaurants.
Visiting Intramuros let’s one see the romanticism of our colonial past as most of the buildings have been in existence for more than 400 years. The patina of history reveals our country’s glorious past, well-worth preserving.
